Plaque and Calculus
Plaque is a sticky film that forms on your teeth. It is made from bacteria and sugar. The bacteria in plaque feed on sugars and other nasty ingredients found in our diets and saliva. Plaque is the main cause of dental cavities and other issues in the mouth such as gum disease. The acids found in plaque eat away at the tooth enamel and gum causing cavities and gingivitis, red swollen and bleeding gums.
Calculus is plaque that has hardened on your teeth. This cannot be removed with an ordinary toothbrush and does require the dentist to use a Scaler. Calculus forms around the gum line and underneath the gums, causing cavities, gingivitis or more seriously, gum disease.
How can I prevent Plaque Calculus build up?
- Brush in light circular motions thoroughly at least twice a day
- Floss between the teeth daily
- Use piksters (interdental brushes) to clean between the teeth
- Limit sugar intake
- Visit the dentist regularly. We recommend every 6 months to have it professionally removed.
