Ulcers & Canker sores
Mouth ulcers are loss of the thin layer of tissue called the mucous membrane inside the mouth. Ulcers can be caused by biting, repeated licking and touching the area, poor oral hygiene, burns and reactions to certain medications and usually clear up between 7-10 days.
Cold sores are painful blisters around the mouth and nose which are caused from the herpes simplex virus. They are highly contagious and can spread very easily even when the blisters are not present. Stress, illness and hormonal changes are all triggers for cold sores.
Oral thrush is a yeast infection which develops inside the mouth also known as Oral Candidiasis. This most often occurs in infants and toddlers and appears as white or yellowish bumps that form on the tongue and cheeks along with dry cracked skin, a bad taste and a sore mouth.
White patchy lesions
Also known as Leukoplakia is a white, thick patches inside the mouth. The most common cause is smoking, injuries to the cheek such as biting, dentures and inflammation in the body. Mild leukoplakia usually clears up on its own.
Oral cancer is a growth or sore in the mouth, lips, tongue, cheeks or throat that does not go away. It can be caused by smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, sun exposure, HPV (Human papillomaviris) or from family history.
Symptoms include swelling, lumps and bumps, crust and erosion. It has a white red or speckled white and red patchy appearance. Unexpected bleeding, numbness, loss of felling, tenderness and pain are some other symptoms. Difficulty chewing or swallowing is also another sign of Oral cancer.
